Chapter 29
Serenity tossed and turned all night, her dreams disturbed by stressful thoughts. The restless sleep left her feeling drained by the time she woke up the next morning. As usual, she hung her laundry on the balcony after turning on the washing machine before bed. It was then that she noticed the stainless steel rods installed on the balcony. They were clearly intended for her to air her laundry. Along with them, various potted plants were neatly arranged, many of which were in full bloom or just budding. Regardless of the size, each flower seemed to be intricately delicate. Serenity’s attention immediately shifted to the flowers, and she found herself captivated by their beauty. She continued her task, hanging clothes and setting up the flower stands she had purchased the day before. As she worked, a creeping sensation made her aware of a pair of eyes watching her. She looked up to find Zachary standing nearby, his gaze cold and unwavering. His expression was as emotionless as ever. Serenity had grown accustomed to his blank demeanor after a few days of marriage.
“Morning, Mr. York,” she greeted him, then added, “These flowers are beautiful. You did a great job.” Serenity could always rely on Zachary to get things done. Zachary responded in a low, husky voice, “Let me know if you run into any issues in the future.” His tone suggested that any requests she made would be no trouble for him.
“Sure,” Serenity replied, offering him a smile before returning to her plants.
“Where did you get these plants? They’re stunning,” she asked. Zachary, ever the skilled liar, replied, “I visited several florists. I can’t quite remember which ones.”
“Ah,” Serenity responded, not pressing him further, satisfied with the results of his effort.
“What are we having for breakfast today?” Zachary’s question made Serenity realize that she had skipped the most important meal of the day. She glanced at her phone and saw it was already past seven o’clock.
