Zachary couldn’t help but feel a sense of competition rise within him. Sure, Shawn was good-looking, but he was confident that he had the upper hand in the looks department. After all, he knew he was more attractive than Shawn. His curiosity about how Serenity saved his name in her contacts was starting to eat away at him.
The moment Serenity answered the phone, Zachary tried to hide his interest, but it wasn’t easy when Shawn’s voice came through the speaker. “Morning, Serenity.”
“That’s early. What’s up?” Serenity replied.
Shawn, with hopeful anticipation in his tone, offered, “Have you had breakfast yet? I’ll pick you up for work, and we can have breakfast together. My treat—or you can buy me breakfast if you want.”
Serenity’s response was casual, almost dismissive. “That’s okay. I’m nearly finished with my breakfast. My husband will be taking me to work later, so you don’t have to make the long trip.”
Zachary couldn’t hide his smile when Serenity mentioned her husband would be the one driving her. He didn’t even realize he was grinning until he caught himself. The mention of her husband clearly hit Shawn hard, as he’d been hoping for a different outcome.
Shawn’s mood took a sudden dive, his enthusiasm dampened by the reminder that Serenity was already taken. He was the one who’d helped her last night, yet Serenity never saw him as anything more than a brother. It was a hard truth for Shawn, who had carried a crush on her for years, but it didn’t seem to matter in the end.
“Okay then,” Shawn said, trying to mask his disappointment. “I’ll have your bike delivered to the shop once it’s repaired.”
“Thank you,” Serenity responded without a hint of suspicion.
