Chapter 86
Josh walked into the office, holding a small stack of papers that looked like office documents at first glance. “Here you go,” he said, sliding the papers across the desk to Zachary before sitting down and setting his breakfast on the table. “Do you want some? I got my food delivered from the Wiltspoon Hotel. It’s delicious.” Zachary, who typically had his meals at the Wiltspoon Hotel—thanks to its affiliation with York Corporation—didn’t need any breakfast from Josh. “I’m good,” he responded while flipping through the file. “Is everything here?”
“Yeah. It’s all there. No stone is left unturned,” Josh confirmed.
Zachary scanned the file, muttering, “It’s not a lot.”
Josh shrugged, “The younger members of the family have it pretty good while the seniors spent their lives on the farm. What more can there be?” Zachary didn’t respond. He noted the lack of substantial details on the seniors, while the younger members of the family had much more to account for. Josh had included various personal details—age, marital status, number of children—in each relative’s profile, padding out the file.
After reading through everything, Zachary had a clearer picture of Serenity’s relatives. The more successful cousins and uncles led comfortable lives. For example, John Hunt worked as an executive in a subsidiary of the Stone Group, earning a million annually, while the least successful cousin still brought in an impressive 400,000 bucks per year. Serenity and her sister probably didn’t earn even close to that much. Yet, these relatives had the audacity to demand that Serenity pay for her grandmother’s medical bills and even for their travel expenses. The sheer shamelessness of them was astonishing. They had walked away with a large portion of the insurance payout, taking advantage of two young sisters who had just lost their parents. And now, they were leaning on Serenity for financial support.
Zachary couldn’t believe how callous her relatives were. He found himself feeling a sense of pity for Serenity.
“Why do you look upset? Did they do something to your missus? Want me to teach them a lesson?” Josh asked, sensing the change in Zachary’s demeanor.
