Serenity, caught off guard by Zachary’s words, smiled softly. “Many couples break up in the face of adversity. We got married without knowing anything about each other, and we’ve only lived together for two weeks. I’m grateful that you’re willing to face this together with me.”

She knew the scandal could easily spiral if not handled well, dragging everyone around her into the mess.

“My sister and brother-in-law were college sweethearts, and they’d been dating for years before they got married. They also have a son together. My brother-in-law wasn’t too pleased when he found out my sister and I were being villainized online.”

Zachary fell quiet for a moment, then responded gently, “Serenity, you can’t use your brother-in-law as a benchmark for every man. It’s unfair to them, and not everyone is the same.” He understood that the relationship between Liberty and Hank had soured, but he didn’t want to make assumptions without evidence. Yet, something about Hank didn’t sit right with him.

“You have a point.” Serenity agreed, though she couldn’t help but feel jaded by Liberty’s experience. She wasn’t sure if love and marriage were worth it anymore. But with Zachary, she was starting to see things differently. Despite moments where he hurt her pride, he was dependable when it counted.

Her thoughts wandered back to Jasmine’s teasing. Since she had signed the six-month contract with Zachary, maybe it was time to consider what they could become, especially with the unexpected bond forming between them.

“There’s a rest stop ahead. Do you need the loo? I want to fill up the tank,” Zachary asked, breaking her thoughts.

“Sure,” Serenity responded, feeling comfortable around him.

A few minutes later, Zachary pulled into the rest area and parked the car. They both got out, but Zachary soon returned to the car to make a call to Josh. As the phone rang, he got straight to the point.

“Josh, I don’t care what you do or how you do it, but you need to get those in the know to speak up for Serenity,” Zachary instructed in a firm tone.

Josh’s response came after a brief pause. “It’s no big deal. I can get it done with a single phone call.”

Zachary knew Josh had connections in the community from when he had been investigating the Hunts. He was confident Josh could make things happen quickly.

“What does Serenity plan to do?” Josh asked, his curiosity piqued.

“She’s gathering evidence to prove her relatives can afford the medical fees. She’s going to present the signed contract, along with proof of how the Hunts have treated her and her sister. I think we can turn this around if the community speaks up for them,” Zachary explained.

Josh chuckled, “Serenity seems composed, level-headed, and speaks with reason. She’s just like you.”

Zachary raised an eyebrow, his tone turning defensive. “How is she like me?”

Josh teased, “She’s your wife. She got her composure from you after spending so much time with you. She held it together despite being victimized. What, do you hate that I praise her wit and poise? Are you taking it the wrong way?”

Zachary nearly hung up on Josh but held himself back. “Can you send someone to the hospital to check on her grandmother’s condition?”

“Got it,” Josh replied, not missing a beat.

After a moment, he added, “I’ve helped you a lot here. Can I take a week off once you’re back?”

Zachary’s voice was firm as he responded, “You get a day at most. People might think you’re getting fired if you take a week off. Clive’s been waiting for a chance to poach you, and he might get upset if it looks like you’re not working.”
