Chapter 80
Myra’s tension simmered beneath her calm exterior as she recalled the painful memories of her mother’s final days. The memories of her mother desperately searching for her estranged husband, refusing to heed any warnings, resurfaced with a vengeance. It was the image of her mother, lost in her pursuit of a man who would never love her the same way, that tormented Myra to this day.
As Kris stood before her, Myra’s gaze grew icy, her voice laced with scorn. “Stop playing games. What is it this time? Are you really here to ask me to give up my inheritance rights over Stark Group?”
Kris, seemingly taken aback by Myra’s directness, stomped her foot in feigned frustration. “Sis, there’s been a misunderstanding. Our father sent me to you because you haven’t answered my calls. The company is in trouble. Some of the shareholders are opposing Dad’s position as director. He thought, maybe, you could help. You own twenty percent of the shares, don’t you?”
Myra’s words cut through the air, harsh and unforgiving. “What’s the point? Aren’t you and your mother already plotting to take everything from me? Isn’t thirty percent of the shares your mother’s fair share?” She scoffed, not giving Kris a chance to finish.
Kris’s face flickered with discomfort, but she pushed on. “Sis, you know that our grandfather built Stark Group. Don’t you want to protect it from outsiders? Dad promised he would return your shares once things settle down. He doesn’t intend to—”
“In your dreams,” Myra interrupted with steely finality, her voice growing cold as she opened her door. “I won’t be part of your schemes. Do you think I haven’t seen through you by now? If it weren’t for you and your mother, none of this would have happened. You’ve destroyed everything, haven’t you?”
Kris faltered, her expression faltering for a moment before her bitterness resurfaced. “You don’t get it, do you? No wonder neither Sean nor Dad cares about you anymore! I’ve always been good enough to take your place, and now… you’ll get what’s coming to you. I heard Lyla Fisher’s back in town. What makes you think Sean will still want you? He already kicked you out of the house, Myra. And there’s one more thing you should know…” Kris’s voice trembled with cruel satisfaction, “Mom’s pregnant. And it’s going to be a boy.”
The words hit Myra like a punch to the gut. Every part of her body went cold, but she didn’t let it show. She slammed the door shut behind her, unable to suppress the flood of emotions. They think they’ve won, but they haven’t. Her mind raced as she walked into her apartment. A male heir. That’s all they want. They don’t care about the company, just the power they can take from me. The familiar bitterness in her throat only deepened, each word Kris said striking a painful chord.
She wanted to cry, but she didn’t. Instead, she pressed the heels of her palms against her eyes, determined not to break down. Will this pain ever end?
